Ways To Make Ada Compliant Window Treatments More Cost Effective

1. Roller Shades Are Your Friend

Regular roller shades with chain pulls do not meet ADA guidelines and may cause you to fail inspection. To use roller shades and still meet ADA guidelines, specify motorized rollers shades with a remote. You can use coupled shades to lower the expense. Coupled shades are mounted together with a middle bracket and share one motor for both shades. By sharing the motor capabilities, you will not have to spend as much to provide motors for each shade that covers a window.

2. Motorization Can Be Affordable!

In the instance that coupling shades does not work (e.g. the windows are recessed or too far apart), consider using battery motors instead of running electrical wires to the window. Modern battery motors can hold a charge for up to eight months before the battery needs a four hour recharge. Battery motors have a five year warranty.

3. Drapery Is Always A Good Idea

A final option to lower costs in ADA guest rooms is to convert the window treatments to drapery. When you are using manual drapery in an ADA room, specify ADA looped baton hardware. The looped baton allows guests to use their hand or fingers to pull the loop to close the drapery. This aid lowers costs considerably and is still within ADA compliance as long as the looped baton reaches from a mounting height within 48 inches off the floor.
